В настоящее время широкое признание среди режиссеров и критиков получила совсем другая теория киномонтажа. Эта теория основывается на том, что любое соединение самых разных по содержанию кадров создает объединенный «образ» с новым смыслом. Объединение рождает нечто большее суммы отдельных частей. Эта теория отождествляется с книгой «Смысл фильма» (Eisenstein, 1942). Славу ее автору — известному русскому режиссеру — принесла та смелость, с которой он объединял с обычной точки зрения несовместимые по содержанию кадры.
В этом смысле термин монтаж означает что-то вроде коллажа. Коллаж придумали художники, пытаясь создать произведения искусства без красок и кистей, наклеивая на холст детали из различных материалов. Считалось, что соединение всякой всячины: лоскутков ткани, фотографий, цветной бумаги,— то есть всего того, что раньше никто в одном произведении не сочетал, будет создавать неожиданный гештальт и привнесет свежую струю в искусство. Слово коллаж означает приклеивание.
Такое произведение можно сфотографировать и выставить для обозрения. Аналогичным образом можно склеивать и куски пленки. «Соединение двух отдельных кадров больше напоминает сотворение чего-то нового, чем простую сумму одного кадра с другим» (Eisenstein, 1942, с. 7). Неясный эстетический оптимизм этого движения противоречит теории естественных глубинных инвариантов структуры. Тем не менее он имел и продолжает иметь значительное влияние на художников и деятелей кино.
Создание фильма несравнимо с созданием живописного полотна. Фильм состоит из событий, событий более высокого порядка, эпизодов, случаев и сюжета. Связи между ними должны устанавливаться с большой тщательностью. Необходимо соблюдать непрерывность. В конечном итоге все более мелкие события должны слиться в одном всеобъемлющем событии.
В этой главе, посвященной анализу кино, я ничего не сказал о звуковом потоке, сопровождающем поток оптического строя, о звуковой дорожке, параллельной изображению.
Ради теоретической простоты я анализировал немой фильм. В жизни последовательность событий сопровождается акустическим потоком информации так же, как и оптическим потоком. В фильме звуковой ряд тоже, за исключением музыки, строго синхронизирован с видеорядом, что помогает поддерживать непрерывность зрительского восприятия, несмотря на разрывы монтажа. Однако теория инвариантов при звуковых изменениях и их связь с инвариантами при зрительных изменениях — это совершенно другой вопрос. Инварианты потока естественных звуков отличаются от инвариантов потока речевых звуков (Gibson, 1966b, гл. 5).
